La Leche League states that a weight gain of 4-7 ounces per week from the fourth day is appropriate. I find that a few physicians in our area tend to panic about weight gain when a baby is just a week or two old, even when baby is producing copious wet diapers. This can send inexperienced new moms into a panic and straight to the formula aisle. We try to provide every pregnant and new mom with a LLL tear off sheet "Is Baby Getting Enough Milk?" so that they will be armed with accurate information in print that they can share with their doctor. I also tell them that while weight gain is an important indicator, that it is not the only important indicator and that all must be considered together. Email addresses always appear at the top of the posting, whether we add them at the bottom or not.
