I have read about switch nursing in the many references available to me, however I am a little confused whether this technique will help a mom who called recently for some advice. 10 week old infant, who MD feels is not gaining well enough. Baby has been gaining 1/2-3/4 oz. per day and MD has gradually increased suggested formula supplements to 12 oz /day. I really am having a difficult time understanding the need for all this formula, but have decided to just help this mom attain the gain this MD is looking for. I have suggested many techniques for increasing supply. Have thought about switch nursing but wonder if it might cut down on the amount of hindmilk baby will receive at each feeding. Mom hears swallows for about first 5-7 minutes, then they really get infrequent. Mom also denies any "feelings" of let-down during feedings, but says she does have some tingling about 30-45 minutes after feeding. This mom really want to nurse and I really would like to help her realize her breastfeeding goals.
