Rob Cordes asks what bodily function doesn't work better at 19 than 40?
Since passing 30 I have derived great comfort from watching the careers of cross country skiers, which rarely peak before the age of 28, and whose peaks often last for many years, taking some of them beyond 40. Maurillo de Zolt, an Italian fireman whose recipe for success in this sport includes at least one bottle of red wine daily, won world class 50 kilometer ski races when he was considerably older than I am now.
The great part is, I don't even have to go skiing myself to feel good about this!
Having grown up nearsighted, I was also delighted to discover that since hitting 40, I can read road signs and recognize friends at great distances without glasses.
