We've recently discussed leaking as a potential "barrier to
breastfeeding" culturally...I work with a very heterogenous population
since I'm in a rural area (are you finding that in TN, Melissa?).
I recently had a mother who had a very difficult time with
latch; I knew something was not right and had her using a pump to keep
up her supply. When we finally got down to the realities, she said "If
you really want to know, I was sexually abused as a teen. I really want
my baby to have the best -- but having her at my breast brings flashbacks
of the abuse. I can do the pump, but I can't breastfeed her."
I managed to say the right things, and this mom has good memories
of the good job she did providing her own milk for her daughter.
BUT --- considering the sexual abuse rate in this country --- is
this one of the reasons for bottlefeeding that nobody's talking about??
I don't remember seeing this anywhere (altho I don't have KGA's file
system I have somewhere near K. Bruce's memory...I haven't checked SPIRS
but may do that tomorrow...)
Snow and more snow here in southern Vermont. It's the most
beautiful thing in the world ...except for your baby's milky smile!
(Good thing there's room for all of us up here on this box....)
My best regards to each of you. Dawn M. Kersula
