From my perspective as a pediatrician and an IBCLC it seems that parents are
less willing to accept that spitting up is normal phenomenon (when there is a
normal growing happy baby). In my early days of practice there was no
medicine for spitting up but now there is zantac and reglan. All the parents have
heard about it from their friends. If I spend time to explain the normalcy of
spitting up in young infants some parents will accept this. Many parents will
not and will keep looking for a doctor that will give them the answer they
want, ie. there must be something wrong and they want medicine to treat it. Some
docs probably don't bother to explain and just prescribe the medicine. Even
in my own practice which is a group practice when I am constantly trying to
explain the normalcy of spitting up and the phenomenon of increased vomiting
with oversupply I find babies on zantac and reglan who are not responding to the
medical treatment. If I am lucky and get to the parent before they are
totally discouraged I am able to diagnose and treat the oversupply. If not they go
off to the gastroenterologist and invariably get "treated" for oversupply by
unfortunately getting lots of diagnostic tests and perhaps weaning.
