The second call I got today was from a friend concerning a mutual
>friend who just delivered baby #3 about 5am this morning. Baby weighed 10
lbs, 5
>oz, arrived by csect. Mom wanted a vbac but did not dilate. Mom also had leg in
>cast which didn't help matters. Baby has a blood glucose level of 30 so the
>hospital ordered formula supplementation by gastric tube.

Melissa, from what I remember when I worked in the hospital setting, a blood
glucose of 30 on day one is not abnormal. Why were they doing a blood test
anyhow? Why don't they just settle down and nurse early and often? I seem to
remember that there was some work done on this, that perhaps all babies have
a glucose that is slightly low for the first brief period (I don't know how
long, perhaps till mom's milk kicks in?), and that this is not abnormal..it
is just that we are so into TESTING everything that we notice it and say
OHMYGAWD, the kid has a glucose of 30.
Then, supplementing the baby with a NG tube with formula? Sounds a little
high tech..If mom is REALLY concerned about brain damage (could this be
possible for a really brief time of a glucose of 30?) couldn't they
supplement by cup, or with syringe and tube AT Breast????

Baby has no interest
>in bf now (apparently is full and zonked from formula)
No kidding...THis is too bad. I hope she is pumping. Perhaps someone from
that hospital has a modem and wants to join LACTNET??? <G>
