Hi Stacey,

The bleeding nipples are not a risk for HSV (herpes) transmission. History
of HSV, as long as no lesions currently on breasts (rare) is a very very low
risk situation. If the mother contracts HSV during pregnancy (primary
infection) or has active genital lesions at delivery then the baby is at
risk of perinatal transmission (hi risk situation) - but can still bf.

Please investigate further the cause of the nipple trauma, if you can. If
the latch is right, and there is no physical cause of irritation, such as
tongue tie, the mother should be able to nurse as long as needed. However,
babies that nurse very very long with resulting nipple damage usually are
latched quite poorly and/or would be suspect for somehting like tongue tie.
