hi --I am not a nurse but an IBCLC- but who says i cannot take a doctors
order.
sure for an iv or giving drugs etc. but if he has called me and says do
something like supplement - i say what with and what are your goals for this
infant - i send him/her a plan- usually the few i work with sy you are the
lactation expert -deal with it. if there is a specific order like giving
oral meds I show the mom and the mom gives them. ( yes i have had to show
them how to measure it in a spoon and them give it to the child) as long as
they do it. As you see i have had more than one mentally challenged mom.

I also ask the doc if he states supplement - what does he prescribe for the
supplement and get a specific brand name formula that he wants for that
child. It is mine and the mother's choice on how that supplement gets in.
As long as we work together and I keep the doc appprised of the situation
and progress all goes well. I have even gone back to hospital reports and
reading over charts of the client see " nice to have lactation consultant's
imput and aid. "
MY recommedations become part of the chart if in the hospital as to the
plan.

Not in the hospital they go to the peds/ob's chart at his or her office as
well as mine.
