<< We've had a lot of discussion lately about how long bm is good in the
frig.
The majority of you all seem to say 3 days or 3 to 5 days. What about milk
at room temp? How long do you tell moms that milk is good at room temp
after
expression? I was told by a WHO rep a few years ago that she tells mom it's
good up to 12 hours! :-O I don't think too many pedi's would go for that.

IN 1987, Pat Bull and I did a study which was published in ICEA's journal.
Our study noted that there was no significant difference in bacterial counts
between breastmilk that was refrigerated immediately after expression and
that left at room temperature for up to at least 10 hours (our study was 10
hours). (Comparison was 30 moms with 3 subsets -- immediate culture; 10
hours at room temp; 10 hours refrigerated -- 90 cultures all together.) In
point of fact, in some cases, there was less bacteria in the room temperature

stored milk than the refrigerated milk. This study was also published in Bf
Review in Australia, and abstracted in BF Abstracts and noted in studies all
over the world. Please note that all we looked at was bacterial count, not
levels of IgA or IgG or anything else....

Hamosh et al said 4 hours, but they looked at different things than we did.
