Hi all,

I have been following the posts on LC and frustration and it is all too
familiar. Having been in Maternal/Child health for 24 years and 12 of that
as an IBCLC I understand where you all are coming from. My work partner was
the supervisor of the Mother Baby Home Health for many years and we started
to see a pattern of behavior and causal factors related to just what all of
you are saying. (pt doesn't remember what was told to them, they hear one
thing when you said something totally different). We termed it (some of you
may have heard me speak on this topic) Cognitive Vacation- The inability
to process information related to thinking, reasoning, remembering,
imagining or learning.

This became very apparent to me one day when a mom called me asking for Mrs.
Lansinoh. Now Lansinoh was one of the last words I had stated to this new
mom just before I left the room. This made a lasting impression on me. So
now I restate the most important thing I want the mom to remember as I'm
leaving the room. With shorter hospital stays and new mother being asked to
do more with less support I think "Cognitive Vacation" will be something we
will be dealing with long into the future.
