I have a client with perfect nipples for nursing who was given a nipple shield in the hospital because the baby wasn't very interested in latching on while in the hospital. No one had time to work with the mom's latch. After going home she realized her baby wouldn't nurse without it and her friends told her about the problems with shields. She called me, we worked with the latch, recommendations re: attempting before/after each feed, lots of skin on skin and reassurance that all babies go back to the breast eventually, and lots of talking to alleviate her unnecessary guilt for not knowing (moms always blame themselves for not knowing just everything). The family dog was there in the middle of it all, wanting attention he wasn't getting as much of these days.
After I left she called saying the dog ate the shield, the husband went to Target to get another one, and she tried harder to get the baby on the breast. The baby never needed the shield but once more, the dog is sleeping smugly and I'm talking about divine providence.
