Hello All,
Just wanted to post about this case because I have never seen or heard of
one like it in >10 years of IBCLC practice. Mom is a month postpartum,
weaned baby at 2 weeks "because my milk never came in." Was started on
dicloxacillin starting 10 days ago for mastitis. symptoms resolved with
treatment, but recurred a week later. she was seen in the office and
referred to our hospital for readmission 2 days ago with bilateral mastitis,
the LC who saw her on admission found her breasts very tight and red, could
not express any milk to relieve pain. Breasts treated with hot packs and
cold cabbage leaves, mom on IV antibiotics. by morning of the next day,
she had developed an obvious abscess on the upper margin of her right
areola. She went for surgery yesterday late afternoon, and when I checked
on her this AM, she told me the surgeon had found bilateral abscesses, total
of 3. Now her wound cultures are coming back positive for MRSA. Sure wish
I had taken photos before surgery.
