Dear Fellow Lactnetters,
I have been quietly lurking for a few months, enjoying many of the
threads-most I would say. I have had many laughs, felt many of your
frustrations and truely have felt humbled by the enormous amount of
knowledge and experience I have seen.
I am an LC from Saskatoon, Sask. in Canada. I work as an RN in a Community
Based Early Discharge Program where we visit new moms and babies at home.
We also man a Breastfeeding Clinic as part of our mandate, plus I
co-facilitate a Post-Partum Depression Support Group (4 of our nurses rotate
through the year). I have 3 children, all very thoroughly breastfed!
I am hoping someone can offer some additional wisdom to a problem I have
been handed.
A doctor in our city referred a woman to our Breastfeeding Clinic for
reassurance.
She is 24 weeks pregnant, first pregnancy. She has been experiencing bloody
discharge from the left nipple for 2 months. She states the discharge is
bright red, painless. It is not running freely but she says if she gently
squeezes her nipple, it is present.
The doctor did an ultrasound which showed "a dilated duct at the 2 o'clock
position but no mass, cystic or solid." The radiologist recommends that if
the symptoms persist, a mammogram should be done after delivery.
I have searched the archives and found mostly comments that investigations
should be carried out, and this is what I have also found in the books I
have reviewed (Lawrence, Riordan and Auerbach). Since she has had the
investigations suggested, I am wondering if anyone has any additional
suggestions, or has worked with a similar situation. I would like to
reassure this
woman, not with false reasurrances but with the experiences of others.
I apologize for the length of my post. TIA, Nancy Klebaum
