Lets be realistic here. Someone from IT working on a printer is not the same as someone seeing an inpatient in a clinical setting, perhaps a mom on magnesium or a premature baby in the NICU. Whether you agree that an IBCLC needs to be a RN or not it is understandable that administrators would be more comfortable with someone with a nursing or medical background. Administrators do not know what education/experience the IBLCE requires for IBCLC certification. They are interested in their risk management and are more comfortable with someone they know has been licensed and trained in physical assement and patient care. I am not saying it is right or fair, but that is the reality. I am just glad that they are hiring an IBCLC in these days of decreasing medicare and medicaid payments, and many uninsured patients that they recieve no payment for!

And by the way, I think if someone throws up on the floor near the person from IT working on the printer they SHOULD get up and throw a towel over the vomit and see if they can assist the person!

Nancy,

It seems to make sense, but who else in the hospital needs to be flexible?
My husband & best friend work in a local hospital.  He is in IT - would any
of his crew agree to also be ready to clean up if needed?  As in, I know you
are working on that printer but someone threw up in the hall and you need to
clean that so stop your work on that printer.  Everyone needs to be
flexible.  My friend works in HR - should she get pulled out to help in
admitting because it's really busy?  That one could be seen as patient care
and she could see something that would add to how the patient received care
& the hospital received payment, since she also works in HR.  As I said, no
other hospital position would stand for it.  It just shows little IBCLC's
are thought of in terms of being useful.  In no other hospital position do
the employees plan on being sent to do work they weren't hired for.

Sorry but this is really a sore spot for me, since as I said knowing people
who work in hospitals who would never be moved to another area to 'help
out'.
