We recently had a full-term baby born to a primip Mom at our hospital
with TTN and mec. aspiration. IV was started and baby was NPO,
respirations were running 85-98/min, but baby was vigorously protesting
her treatment. (Happy only when skin to skin with Mom) who was febrile
herself with a cold she had before labor began, and needed frequent
rests in bed. By the second day respiration still weren't under 80, but
sats had always been good. As soon as Mom would hold her, respirations
would go below 60's, so we put her to breast (Mom had been pumping and
had colostrum.) Baby latched right on, respirations 40-50's and fed for
20 min. Happy little camper. When Mom put her down, up went the resp
rate to 80's again. Gratifying to see it works just like the experts
siad it would. Moral of the story from study of one: If Mom can
kangeroo with baby, respirations may come down enough to allow
brfeeding, lowering the respiratory rate even further, and allowing
breastfeeding to continue. I agree with watching closely also.
