Do any of you have a written policy or protocol to follow in the event that a baby gets breastmilk expressed for another baby? I was unable to find this in archives-perhaps didn't have the correct key words. If this has been discussed and someone remembers when, I would appreciate that information.
Currently we must do an incident report and have all 4 people involved (both moms and both babies) checked serologically. I'm not sure what decision making goes on after all that. One case I am aware of, the mom whose milk was given by accident was found to be Hepatitis C positive. The baby who got the milk is being checked and so far is healthy, which would be expected.
Unfortunately, without a written policy these cases will be handled in varying ways and I worry that people get frightened unnecessarily.
thanks, tracy
