Heather writes about a woman with unusual looking breasts and describes
concerns about a hungry looking/acting baby. "He was born at 6.09, had a
4th-day discharge weight of 6.01, on day 7 was 6.05, and at 3 weeks was
7.04. By day 24 he weighs 7.08." While this is technically what people call
"within normal limits" a lot of robustly feeding babies are gaining a pound
a week at this phase. If this woman is a low producer, she may have had an
engorgement phase that was just enough to get the baby back to birth weight
and a little beyond. As that initial fullness diminshes, the weight gain
may stagnate. These are situations that I like to keep a close eye on.
There are lots of possibilities, including that the baby is somehow poorly
driving production. But certainly it would be wise to undertake measures to
push her production and keep monitoring infant growth.
