Can anyone help with resources re new baby breastfeeding. This is the case!
Large baby born by Caes. Section. Previous 2 babies fed poorly & this
mother had chronic mastitis one side. She consulted with an L.C. and the
plan was to feed on the other side only this baby.
C/S O.K. baby in a good condition. Difficlt to attach & sore nipples. The
baby fed and was relaxed after feeds. Demanded only 3 hrly initially. Not
lethargic in that it cried for feeds.
3rd day weigh, baby lost 40gm over 10% of BW. 4th day lost a further 90gm.
She asked for a paediatrician who said comp the baby with formula. She
refused to give this. Would allow boiled water to be given. Paed insisted
on dextrose feeds.
12 hours later the mother signed herself out of hospital AOR. 12 years
hours later the baby had gained 250 gms. Breasts were starting to fill
just prior to discharge.
Expressing was started 2nd day. Baby offered 2nd breast on 2nd day.and
thereafter.Lumpy breast took 2-3 weeks to free of plugged areas but is now
OK & baby feeds well both sides.
Can any tell me where to find literature re normal number of wet nappies &
stools in the first few days post delivery. When to intervene . Signs of
dehydration. Does any one work in a hospital where this baby would have
been allowed to b.f. and not comped. This baby was not distressed but
didn't sleep a lot from what I gather.
I wasn't there- Just asked to counsel and help her debrief and recover from
the experience.
