Kathy Dettwyler posts on a baby whose initial weight loss was dramatic and
long-lasting, and who is now bottle fed.
"I wonder if the lack of bonding led to the decision
to give up on breastfeeding so easily, or if the giving up on breastfeeding
led to the lack of bonding."

And I wonder whether the lack of bonding led to the baby's initial failure
to start thriving... it certainly has been known to happen in other cases.
Sometimes the mother may be severely disturbed and the baby just doesn't
dare to take hold, and it reinforces the distance between them. Sometimes
the baby is the disturbed one who fails to engage the mother, and she reacts
by shutting down. This situation does sound sad, and it is impossible for
any of us to know what the mother is feeling. I fear that human milk may be
just part of this particular baby's loss.
