I think that someone asked for a copy of the Brazil code. You can probably
get from WHO or UNICEF (email Dora Gutierrez at
<[log in to unmask]>, or possiblity Barbara Heiser at NABA, but
you might be interested in getting in contact with some of the breastfeeding
folks in Brazil directly at <[log in to unmask]> Denise Arcoverde is the
coordinator for WABA in Brazil and she can answer you in English. You may
also be interested to know that Guatemala has a very tough code and has sued
G_____ to get the little baby's head off the top of the cap. They are
having very heavy going and are being leaned on by governments, even though
this company is not based any more in the US. You might be interested in
emailing Magda Fischer at INCAP <[log in to unmask] who may be able to
send you a copy of or at least an English summary of the Guatemala code.
Some of you may remember that Barbara Heiser got together a group of people
at the 1991 LLLI convention to meet on the issue of a code and I am sure
that there are lots of people on the net who would like to network on this
issue. In the wake of the triumphs against cigarette smoking, it may be
time to begin to work on this issue in a systematic fashion.

I have just finished translating the results of a baseline evaluation survey
we just finished in Honduras and in an area of the country where only 43% of
the people have indoor toilets and 35% have indoor faucets, among over 1500
women with babies under six months, 57% were giving other milks and 13% had
already weaned their under six months of age babies. Of this group that
gave milks, close to half were using formulas with very expensive prices
tags and names very familiar to us. In fact, by the US continuing to ignore
this issue, we certainly provide a very bad model for the rest of the world.
I'm going back to Honduras pretty soon to continue the struggle, but it
would be great for those of you who remain in the "first world" to become
more active on this issue.
