I've seen this done a couple of times in my 14 years of practice. But many
of the ward staff I worked with were used to seeing it done frequently, from
the bad old days before hospitals here started respecting the breastfeeding
culture and quit giving babies glucose water and/or formula the first week
of life. Babies know what's good for them and they don't like formula or
sugar water!

The babies I have seen this done on, were really retching and bringing up
clotted blood from bloody amniotic fluid, and it seemed to help. It is not
done routinely in Norway anywhere now, and I didn't even learn how to do it
in midwifery school. I was shown by an old-timer on our staff.
