If I am remembering correctly, mom is on hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic,
for high blood pressure, now resolved. Can she obtain a home monitor for her
blood pressure checks and discontinue this one if her BP is normal?
The synthroid, not a problem as it replaces her own low thyroid level.
The antibiotic, she didn't say which one, but usually compatible with bf,
especially since she said she would be finished it in 2 days. Sulfa
antibiotics can be problematic for a preterm baby, especially if
hyperbilirubinemic. I think she said it was a *high powered* type of
antibiotic, so I'm not sure.
The narcotic is the most worrisome to me. Remember, this is a pretern baby
that apparently was sick and needed NICU care. Medications are more
worrisome with preterm and/or sick infants. The drugs are not metabolized
out as effectively as with well, term infants. The baby may have a history
of apnea or poor feeding.
Since the mother has chronic pain, she will evidently be on long-term
regular use of narcotics. She should investigate the least "toxic" drug for
her baby, and one that will also help her manage her situation. I would
suggest that she also investigate other pain lowering modalities, that may
actually work for her, or at least lessen her need for the narcotic. For
example, TENS unit, biofeedback, acupuncture - many modalities I am not
necessarily an expert on, but mom can find folks who are.
Best wishes to her and baby,
