We did go around and around about this before the summer, and the
listmothers never did post to the list on what we decided on at the time,
though you all would have noticed if we had limited access to the list.
We've had reports that there are people reading LN who use the information
they get there, to decide what hospital to target for a renewed attack by
formula reps. That is, if someone posts on their own situation in which
they are struggling to keep their workplace free of formula industry
influence to the detriment of breastfeeding, these moles on LN simply step
up their efforts aimed at that poster's superiors at work.
We also know there are IBCLCs who have gone to serve the breastmilk
substitute industry. If I knew of such a person by name I would take steps
through IBLCE to bring sanctions on them, because as I understand the code
of ethics for IBCLCs, working for a formula company is not compatible with
holding the credential IBCLC. It is not necessary to name such a person on
Lactnet, but it is necessary to blow the whistle in the appropriate forum,
in this case IBLCE.
I would like to issue an open invitation to those of you working in
hospitals who still take formula company money in the form of discounts or
free supplies, in exchange for prostituting their own employees to be PR
agents for the formula in question. I do not use the word prostitution
casually. The invitation is as follows:
If you need to alert other subscribers to sleazy practices by formula
company reps, send the post to me. I will remove all identifying
information except country of origin, unless even that would compromise you,
and post it to the list so that we can keep all our subscribers aware of how
companies are behaving in conflict with the WHO code, while not giving moles
the information they need to target 'problem' locations. Personally I would
prefer it if the name of the company in question were included, but I can
foresee problems in doing so if I don't know the person sending me the post
in the first place.
