I too have had many moms tell me that the "LC" in the hospital told her this or
that. Now I know that that hospital does not have an LC, but is using nurses
to give incorrect lactation information. Just today, a mom cancelled an
appointment with me (a private LC) because this hospital told her that she
could avail herself of the hospital's LC. This mom had a 26 week preemie, has
sore nipples and is getting less and less milk. The hospital LC does not look
at her nipples to see what is going on (this mom recently got over? a case of
oral thrush) and told her she just needs to keep drinking lots and lots to get
more milk. She felt like she didn't want to have to pay me if she could get
free help in the hospital but expressed concern that the LC at the hospital
would not be able to help her. I told her if it would make her comfortable,
then go ahead and see the person at the hospital one more time - if she wasn't
satisfied, I'd still be happy to see her and work out a payment plan to help
with the money situation. Soooooooooooo frustrating that this big important
hospital in my area won't employ a *real* LC, but keeps insisting that they
have them on their staff.
