Interesting………this was the argument I was given when someone was trying
to convince me to leave my name on the paper which hinted that
breastfeeding for longer than one year was "dangerous" to infant
health. Note that here the Lucas article is also cited as it is in the
paper. For those of you who don't remember, my hospital did a wonderful
study showing that fat content of human milk was higher after the first
year. I was thrilled that finally we would have an argument to those
peds who are saying that breastfeeding for longer than a few months was
useless since breast milk turns to water after a while. Instead of
emphasizing the benefits, the work was twisted to say that breastfeeding
for longer was actually detrimental to health later in life. I was told
that no other species of animals continues to breastfeed when they start
eating meat.
Seeing this assumption again makes me believe that this is a new slant
by the artificial milk companies, since the person who told me this is
in very tight with one of the largest companies. Can this journal (
New Scientist) be traced to artificial milk money?? I have noticed this
before in this particular journal.
Esther Grunis, IBCLC
