Google breastfeeding and PKU. A certain amount of breastmilk is safe for
a baby dxed with PKU and there are articles out there (one from LLL) with
info about this. I also remember reading a case study or article--can't
remember which--in JHL re bfdg and PKU. Since the amount of breastmilk provided
the baby is limited, this could be a very good use of the Baby Weigh
scale. Mom could do test wts. to determine how much baby is getting. When baby
has had the limit stop bfdg that day. There is good info out there though.
It will be up to you or the mom to bring the research based info to the
docs.

What advice would you give a mom (and grandmom) whose hearts are breaking
with the news that the otherwise healthy infant had a positive PKU test?
They are being told everything must be measured so the baby cannot go to
the
breast. Or they can feed the newborn 2 oz of Pku formula, then put the
baby
to breast--when obviously the baby would not take the breast or might take
it then vomit from the overload of milk...
