The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a small piece today reporting on an
article in the March issue of Pediatrics.  Breastfed babies who used
pacifiers in a NY study nursed an average of 8 times daily vs 9 times,
nursed shorter periods, and weaned earlier.  I'd like to hear more from
someone who has read the journal itself.

Back in the olden days when I nursed my own babies I did use pacifiers for
the purpose of getting the babies to nurse less frequently and for shorter
periods. I do believe it ultimately interfered with my milk supply for my
first baby, but not for my other three.  Probably because I knew more about
increasing my supply and other subtle differences - I ate better,
deliberately kept a little more weight on, was more rested, etc. with the
last three.  Also used pacifier to help us both get more sleep at night. My
babies all seemed to want something in their mouths all the time.  If the
breast fell out at night they'd wake up again, and again, and again. One big
problem with using the pacifiers, however, was that with the last three my
menses resumed at 6 wks. postpartum and ovulation  at 5 mos. .Guess who had
4 babies in 5 1/2 yrs!!
