I have a question from a mom who is nursing a 1 year old(her 4th child-1st
breastfed). She feels she needs to take oral contraception, but is concerned
about how it will affect breastfeeding. Her doctor has told her that she is
taking a very low dose which is compatible with breastfeeding. However, she
has reason to doubt the information she gets from this doctor. I have read
conflicting information about the Pill. This woman has a very low income and
feels she has no choice about her health care practitioner or birth control
method( it's a long story). Breastfeeding and birth control are both very
important to her. She feels that breastfeeding is one of the only things she
has done right with her parenting and would like to continue. I would like to
be able to reassure her that taking a low dose oral contraceptive is safe for
the baby. What is the latest on the Pill?
