I saw a mom recently who had developed bad mastitis, breast massage an
antibiotic helped some, but did not resolve, so she went to a breast
surgeon. He determined that she had a galactocele which he aspirated and
told her not to breast feed on that side so she has been pumping for over
two weeks.I have been out of town and have not done a follow-up visit with
her. She now reports that the breast surgeon says there is still a
galactocele, but he isn't going to aspirate this time and wants her to stay
on antibiotic and continue pumping for yet another week. I can find no
reason why she should not be able to nurse the baby, but mom reports that
the surgeon is afraid that the baby will introduce more bacteria to the
breast. Wondering if anyone knows of literature such as evidenced based
study, etc. that I could send to mom and doctor on this subject. I would
like to tell mom to go ahead and nurse, but don't want to contradict her
doctor. Thanks in advance for any helpl
