I've been lurking on Lactnet for the past few weeks, but this message has
given me the push to introduce myself. My name is Paul Zimmer and I am a
scientist in the Developmental Immunology Division at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham. I have a Ph.D. in human nutrition from Cornell
University and my primary research interests are in nutrient-immune
interactions in the lactating mother and the effects of lactation on immune
status of the mother-child dyad. I am also a member of the International
Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation.
That said, I want to respond to Marie Davis' comment about the dental
caries
study here at UAB. I started work as one of the scientists working on Dr.
Caufield's study in September and I have personally worked to revise the
questionnaire and sampling procedures so that we can address the issue of
how
breastfeeding influences the development of anti-caries immunity in the
infant. All of the principal investigators have been VERY supportive of
this
effort and they have a real interest in learning what role breastfeeding
may
play in the development of the infant's immune system. I would really like
to know what the newspaper article said to elicit your unhappy response to

The article goes on to say that the University of Alabama at Birmingham is
recruiting 200-300 mother infant pairs to follow from birth to three years
for their study. "Women at high risk for transmitting the cavity causing
bacteria will be treated with antimicrobial agents."

(Kathy Dettwyler can you *jump* on these people at the university level to
isolate breastfeeding couplets as a sub-study group? I'm sure breastmilk

What really angers me is that this looks someone's theory that has yet to
be
proven, but is put in the paper like its already fact. Few people will get
past the headline.
One last thought: doesn't treating people with a lot of antibiotics result
in
SUPER germs?
