Hi Netters,

Just received my AAP Newsmagazine, vol 14, Number 3, March 1998 issue.
They discussed an article "Weekend SIDS" by Williams, SM, et al, from the
Archives of Disease in Childhood, 1997;77:415-419. They state "SIDS may be
more common during weekends because of social activities or a lesser
protective effect of room sharing with an adult during that time, New
Zealand researchers stated". More dealths also occured on Sunday. Then
they go on to say "Sharing a bedroom with an adult had a stronger
protective effect on weekdays than on weekends, possible due to the
hypothesis that parents are more relaxed on weekends and sleep more deeply
so that they are less likely to respond to the their infants' needs. It is
nice to see they are getting info. on bed sharing out to other Peds.and
that there is a positive effect on the infants. Hope everyone is having a
good weekend.
By the way. If anyone is interested in contacting the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) you can do so at
(630)916-5600 and address is 1 Renaissance Blvd., Oakbrook Terrace, IL
60181 and ask for Carol Patterson, Activity Director. If is a town over
from me. When I had talked to them, not to long ago, they said that
their standards have become much more general and no so specific. As far
as BF goes, there really was no standards on BF nor breastmilk. I felt
that was pretty sad considering all that is out from the AAP and BFHI.
They surely should get some standards in favor of and promoting BF in the
hospitals. For those of you outside of the US, JCAHO is the BIG GUNS that
tour/inspect all hospitals in the US every year to see if they are meeting
their standards. Everyone for several weeks in the hospitals, prior to
inspection, run around crazy.
