Re: Tx hospital--the grape jelly one
Melissa, as a matter of fact, I received word last night that a hospital
survey is being mailed on Monday.
Denny, if you are not a part of the North Texas Breastfeeding Coalition,
please email me privately and I will give you a couple of names to hook
up with. Your hospital will be asked to complete this survey.

The hospital survey is based on the tool used by Andrea Kovach in the
Philadelphia area, and published in JHL and elsewhere. It is designed
to help hospitals assess how close they are to becoming Baby Friendly.
The Texas Department of Health obtained permission to use this survey,
and will tally the results. The North Texas area will act as a pilot
for this study, thanks to the strength of the Coalition.

I am also happy to say that we have implemented the Texas Ten Step
Hospital Program. This model policy, based on the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps
to Successful Breastfeeding, was written jointly with TDH and the Texas
Hospital Association. THA sent the model policy and applications to all
300 hospitals in Texas that serve mothers and babies, including
children's hospitals. When hospitals complete the application, and we
complete the evaluation, they receive the designation of "Texas Ten Step
Hospital". This comes with a letter from the Commissioner encouraging
them to complete the further steps necessary to become Baby Friendly.

I had hoped to post this on Lactnet when we had the information about
the Texas Ten Step Hospital Program on our website, but unfortunately,
we are still 2-4 weeks away from making URL changes. I am unable to
send information to other states at this time. Please know that I will
announce the URL when you can view information about this program on the
internet.

Meanwhile, three hospitals have been designated Texas Ten Step
Hospitals, and 3 more are in the process of evaluation. This is the way
we have chosen to honor the work hospitals have been doing over the
years in their struggle toward breastfeeding-supportive practices.
