One thing hasn't been mentioned in posts yet that I am wondering if other
areas have trouble with.

Rooming in. It's not the hospital or the nurses or the admin who are
objecting here: it's the PARENTS!

They want the baby taken to the nursery because (as her family will say)
"it's just too much to expect her to go through birth and care for her baby
full time already!" or mom wants to go have a smoke in the lounge (I live
in Quebec where I guess the language barrier is preventing people from
realizing you don't smoke to PREVENT cancer) they're offended they have to
bring their OWN pacifiers if they want to use one, etc etc.

When I was telling some friends I was going to Montreal to have my baby in
the birth centre there (for the record even if I WANTED a hospital birth it
sure as he double hockey sticks would not be in Laval), they said "oh but
they just renovated the maternity ward in the hospital in Laval (the island
I actually live on) and now there's a little cubicle for two babies between
each set of rooms so you can see your baby more often." I was horrified a
brand new facility would be built like this.

I asked my midwife about it and told her how my friends (childless as of
the moment) just did not get me wanting full time contact with my baby and
why wouldn't I want him in the cute little cubicle (GAK!). And that was
when she clued me into the parents not being interested and downright
resisting. and that this was a way to get the babies as close to rooming
in as possible for the moment.

Because since we have govt. health care here people don't think any 'cut'
is in the best interest of patients, they think it's done to save $.
Admittedly this is probably the biggest reason admin goes for it so easily.
But the parents man they raise a *fit* if rooming in is even suggested.
