I would like to know if anyone out there has experience with this or a
similar situation.

A mother with a 5 day old called me (she is a family friend) as well as her
doctors and hospital staff. She had had a c-section and the baby was given
bottles in the nursery. She was very worried about supply because although
baby would latch she didn't have milk yet. And her father told her that her
mom "was never able to breastfeed because she didn't have any milk." They
were continuing the supplemental bottles. She began to supplement at the
breast with a dropper and was very happy that the baby would then stay on
the breast. I got her to start pumping and she got just a few drops even
after a day. She tried renting a Lactina with the same result. She has no
history of breast surgery nor inadequate tissue development and did have
some breast changes during pregnancy.

Thank goodness for the LC she contacted in her state. She discovered that
the mother was taking DOSTINEX (Cabergoline), an antiprolactin. It had been
prescribed for high levels of prolactin when she was doing IVF. She was told
to stay on it after she had conceived. The mother said "I have no one to
blame but myself as I never asked if I should continue after birth." I know
we need to be our won health care advocates but really!

Hale says, "It will completely and irreversibly suppress lactation and
should not be used in mothers who are breastfeeding." Are there any herbs
that might help with this sort of suppressed or aborted supply? Her doctor
wants to wait a week before giving her Reglan. I have given her information
on Domperidone. And, thankfully, the baby is still willing to take the
breast (with supplementation).

Any helpful advice for this situation?

Thanks you!

P.S. I have learned my lesson about asking what drugs a mother may be
taking!

I have learned my lesson, always what drugs a mother is taking!
