Nancy Morbacher's Breastfeeding Answers Made Simple has a reference in there about how much extra babies consume from formula which is far in excess of the extra amount they need for the metabolic cost of formula (which was something like a piddly 5% -- but I'm busy tonight so I'm not checking her book -- you can do it yourself). I'm sure someone sat down and estimated how many extra calories that unnecessary overstuffing of formula fed babies contributes to their ingestion in the first year of life. Given what I read of the discrepancies in volume, I'd definitely believe an extra 30,000.

Best, Susan.
