Dear Pat,

I was intrigued to hear your comments about the human body display at the
Science Center in Orlando. The Boston Science Museum has a similar exhibit
and even shows a mother holding a baby and...of course... a baby bottle. I
have often submitted comments and have become convinced that the change
will have to come as part of a grant-financed project to produce a
lactation exhibit. I imagine that it wouldn't be too hard to market such an
exhibit once it is made.

Just dreaming....an excellent photographer, a copy writer, and an LC could
put together the kind of glossy display the science museums like. Now,
while we have some good momentum around the importance of breastfeeding,
would be a perfect time to apply for a grant. I bet the resource department
of a science museum could tell us who might fund such a project.

So, who among us has the time to do it? Is someone working on a master's
degree in public health and could turn her thesis on breastfeeding
education into the exhibit? I think it would be a lot of fun to do but my
plans are leading me in other directions.

Please steal this idea, someone. It is up for grabs and I could probably be
talked into helping a little.

Subject: Re: spent the day with Chele Marmet

I had a much needed break from weepy moms today. I had a call last night
from
an area reporter wanting to do an interview the the Orlando Sentinel about
working mothers and breastfeeding. I agreed to give the interview tomorrow
afternoon.

I knew that Chele was coming to Orlando to attend the International
Conference
on the Theory and Practice of Human Lactation Research and Breastfeeding
Management and to present a Clinical Workshop next week. So, this morning
about 6:30, I had a phone call from the president of the Florida Lactation
Consultant Association. She had a call from Chele wanting to know if
anyone
was available to take Chele to lunch and show her around Orlando. I told
her
I would have to check my schedule at the office and see if I could fit it
in.
Went to the office and didn't have anyone scheduled to see me, so I popped
in
on the three newborns who were in for newborn doc visits and spoke with
moms.
All were doing well. My pager had gone off as I had walked in office door
and
it was Chele, called her and told her I could pick her up about 11:00.
 Called
the reporter to comfirm our interview and she couldn't make it till 4:00.
Made some follow up calls and was off to pick up Chele.

We had a delightful lunch and then drove around Orlando. She said she had
been to conferences out near Disney many times, but never seen downtown
Orlando. We ended up at the New Science Center. We had a great time in the
human body display where you walk through the human body. Of course, the
mouth was Chele's special interest as we searched for the S-spot and the
pitutary. We did notice that the model of the woman had non-lactating
breast.
So, we both wrote suggestions that they include a model of a lactating
breast
and breastfeeding information.

Then, I took her back to my office to do the interview. I introduced Chele
to
the reporter and asked if she minded Chele sharing in the interview. The
young woman reporter was delightful and enthusiastic about breastfeeding
and
it was a fun interview (hope it comes out in print in a positive light and
correctly quoted). It was a fun day, and a nice break from the usual.

Thanks Margie for the cyber-HUG and thanks Patricia for the offer for the
Kleenex.
Thanks to all for your wonderful support. I didn't get hold of my over
anxious mom today only her answering machine. SIGH I'm a little concerned
as
I called twice and left message the second time. I'll say a prayer and
hope
that she calls with good news. As one of my follow up calls was good news,
baby who refused to latch for three days, started latching last night and
has
continued ever since.

Warmly,
Pat Lindsey, IBCLC near Orlando
