Dear Lactnetters,

I'm currently no mail but wanted to pass this announcement on.
Wondering if there is a "reason" that they undertook this extra
assurance of safety......?? Their stock shares have already gone up
$8.50 today on the US market.

FDA Gives Favorable Review for Martek DHA Derived From Former OmegaTech
Technology

COLUMBIA, Md., March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Martek Biosciences
Corporation (Nasdaq: MATK) announced today that the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has completed a favorable review of the company's
generally recognized as safe (GRAS) notification for use of the former
OmegaTech DHA in food applications. This additional Martek DHA is
derived from a different alga than the DHA that is authorized for
addition to infant formulas. The agency has issued a letter informing
the company that the FDA has no questions regarding the company's
notification that the Martek DHA under review is safe for use in food
products. This FDA review was not required but was undertaken by Martek
because it believes the extra review provides further indication of
future food safety.

The acknowledgment from the FDA comes after review of the extensive
battery of safety and clinical data on the Martek DHA oil, and supports
the affirmation of an independent panel of expert physicians, scientists
and toxicologists that the Martek oil is GRAS for use in food products.
A list of the food products in which the DHA would be included and the
maximum level of inclusion were part of the review.

Martek is working with several food manufacturers to include its DHA in
their food products including yogurt, cheese, nutrition bars, and
several other applications. This Martek DHA oil is designed specifically
for use as a food ingredient. It is manufactured using technology that
was obtained by Martek in its 2002 acquisition of OmegaTech.

"Martek has gone the extra mile to assure its customers of the safety of
its DHA for food," commented Henry Linsert, Jr., Chairman and CEO of
Martek Biosciences Corporation. "This result marks another step toward
food manufacturers providing a safe DHA, without possible mercury,
dioxin, and PCB contaminants, in their products."

Martek Biosciences Corporation develops, manufactures and sells products
from microalgae. The Company's products include: (1) specialty,
nutritional oils for infant formula that aid in the development of the
eyes and central nervous system in newborns; (2) nutritional supplements
and food ingredients that may play a beneficial role in promoting mental
and cardiovascular health throughout life; and (3) new, powerful
fluorescent markers for diagnostics, rapid miniaturized screening, and
gene and protein detection.

This press release contains forward-looking statements regarding the
commercialization of Martek's products. Such statements involve risks
and uncertainties that could cause future actual results to differ due
to a variety of risk factors, including without limitation those factors
set forth in Martek's filings with the Securities and Exchange
Commission.
