To Linda (and others) re: crossfeeding between mothers and grandmothers.
   Even though my mother doesn't like for me to bring this up in her
presence, she was also "crossfed" by her grandmother. It was not uncommon,
especially in the south (U.S.) for a mother to be having the end of her
childbearing years while her eldest son or daughter was beginning theirs...
my grandmother and my great-grandmother took turns working in the fields
on the farm. It was a logical solution, because everyone breastfed in the
30's. However, I find it interesting and a little sad to think it was a
cultural norm within families, and now my mother doesn't think we should
talk about it.  I do know of farming families who practice this today, but
they are hesitant to admit it to their pediatricians or persons outside of
their community.
