I'm so sorry! I accidentally sent a prior message prematurely by hitting the
wrong button on the computer. This mom is pumping with a Pump In Style,
despite my educating on the need for a hospital-grade electric breastpump. She
wants/desires her baby at the breast. She doesn't want to pump at all. That's
the rationale for giving the SNS a trial at breast. So, based on others'
feedback, I will suggest to her that she try cupfeeding her baby. I have tried to
support this mom's desire to keep her baby on the breast longer, but based on
everyone's feedback, I have counseled her to continue to offer breast largely
nonnutritionally and I will encourage her to offer the cup more frequently.
Thanks everyone! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. It
sounds like I'm not.
This mom did very well! She exclusively breastfed her baby on one breast for
6 months. And, I've tried to steer her towards starting solids such as
avocado, mashed bananas, & sweet potatoe. So, I will continue to counsel her
towards solids, cupfeeding, and continued breast.
Sincerely,
Carol Chamblin, RN, MS, IBCLC
