Well, maybe this isn't so off topic after all. My daughter Jill and husband
Derrick had our first grandbaby on Tuesday. His name is Nathaniel Deven,
weighed 7-7 & is 22 inches long. Of course, doting GranJan (or Grammy Jan)
thinks he is absolutely darling. It was a hellacious labor (posterior, of
course) of 21 hours with 2 1/2 hours of pushing and slow, slow, slow dilitation.
No pitocin and no artificial rupture of membranes until she was complete,
praise God for that. She finally said she HAD to have an epidural when after 3
1/2 hours of back to back and in the back miserable contractions, accompanied
by nearly constant vomiting even in the bathtub, she had only moved from 5
to 6.
So -- punkie pie is finally born, cute as a button, and after about 1/2 hour
on Mommy's chest starts rooting....but can't latch on. Tries and tries.
Grammy checks his suck -- horribly disorganized (well, what did we expect after
that sort of a labor), and -- oh drat -- he is completely tongue tied.
Later, of course, we found out that Daddy Derrick was tongue tied as is was his
oldest nephew. (A side word to all LCs: when your daughters start dating,
make sure they (a) find out about breastfeeding and (b) find out if there is a
history of ankyloglossia in the family). Fortunately, her pediatrician will
clip it, but not until they go in for their first weight check -- hopefully
on Saturday. Meanwhile, we are pumping, and fingerfeeding which is helping to
organize his suck. It's much better now. But still can only briefly peek
his tongue over the lower gum line for a milisecond.
(Note to LCs with sons: Make sure prospective daughters in law have lovely,
long stretchy nipples and breast tissue, especially if there is a history of
tongue-tie in the family. I forgot to pass that on to Jill.....)
I will say she has gotten wonderful care in the hospital -- it has been
great. After the abysmal breastfeeding class we attended, I was not sure what
was going to happen, but I know that if she had been at another hospital, she
would have ended up w/ a C/Section. Her physician was very comfortable not
adhering to the Friedman curve and letting nature take its course, even w/ a
posterior. (I discussed being head first w/ the baby, told him no nuchal cord,
and no mec staining, but forgot to mention that anterior is the position of
choice. I'll know better with the next baby).
So, fully expecting to be able to give everyone a rosy report of birth and
breastfeeding, I come instead with a "don't it just figure" tale instead.
