If a baby gets ill in a NICU (a very real possibility), it is possible that
an illness could be caused by "something" in the back of a single-use breast
pump that could not be seen (ie a virus, mold, etc.). There are many ways to
get breastmilk from a breast without using a breastpump that has been used by
someone else: manual expression, manual pump, grant rental pump, or loaner pump
from the hospital (yes, we had those) I DID NOT say that they baby couldn't
be given breastmilk, and that there was not another way. A resposible IBCLC in
a hospital would have alternatives, as did our department, and we used all of
them. We must realize that we have to be responsible, and follow reasonable
manufacturer's guidelines for product use. It is my opinion that multiple use
of a single-user pump, especially for an ill or fragile child, is not the
most responsible use of the product, expecially when alternatives are available.
