I have been following the posts on bottle feeding with great interest.
The IBCLC part of me rebels strongly against practices observed when
babies are being bottle fed. Yes, I am a Nursery Nurse too.
Our pediatricians require that all newborns being discharged who are
being bottle fed must take 30cc X 2 prior to discharge usually at 24
hrs to 48 hrs of age. If it is a breastfed baby who is not nursing
well, usually the same rule applies - the baby must be bottle feeding
well - if we cannot persuade the mother to stay an extra day.
I have ground my teeth oh so frequently when watching the babies being
"stuffed". I have talked to the nurses ad nauseam about stomach size,
fatigue, headaches, neck aches, the don't want to eat, hate this
stuff, I'm full already, can't you see my satiety cues etc. It is a
heartbreaker. Yet, I can see the pedis point of view - they have to
know that the babies are able to take in and retain formula prior to
leaving the hospital with possibly inexperienced mothers. I'm sure
they would be really upset to find out that breastfed babies aren't
taking in 30ccs x 2 of breastmilk prior to discharge, and I'm not
about to tell them that!
Have I discussed this with the pedis? No, this is a discussion that
won't go far and I'm sorry but I may have other axes to grind for the
breastfeeders in the future. Very infrequently I have mentioned the
word forcefeeding - that gets me "The Look"! I do feel sorry for those
bottle fed babies though.
