I have a mom in my bf class who weaned her 2 yr. old at 6 wks. due to an
undiagnosed and untreated case of severe oversupply and powerful MER.
(peds lc said everything was fine since baby was gaining weight so well
and had plenty of wet and poopy diapers - poor mom said she never had
even one pleasant feed - baby was constantly fussy and never nursed for
more than 5 minutes at one time) She was relieved to know that she had
a real problem (lc told her that she just needed to relax) and that we
could do something about it this time around. Plan to have her nurse on
one side for at least 4 hours before switching breasts and use a more
upright nursing position to help with the MER. If her supply is as
copious as before (she sounds like she had tons of milk), I would like
to start her on cabbage compresses and sage tea ASAP. Would it be
appropriate to begin these the first week postpartum if she immediately
shows signs of the oversupply or would that be too soon in the process?
Never dealt with something this severe before and this mom really wants
to nurse this baby and have the kind of experience that she had seen other moms have - peaceful and satisfying for her and her baby. Any advice?
