Hi June
To my knowledge, and in my opinion, I don't think there is any advantage in
mechanical pumping over hand expressing. In fact, some experts prefer hand
expression as a more effective and mother friendly way of getting milk for
the baby, especially in the first days. I would argue that perhaps it would
be appropriate to validate that the nurses are doing a good thing by
starting the mother hand expressing as soon as possible, if separated from
infant. You could certainly make the point that mothers could be given a
choice and offered an electric or manual pump if they prefer. It is actually
much quicker, in my opinion, to instruct and demonstrate hand expression to
a mom rather than cleaning, setting up, and instructing /demo on electric
pump use. I do agree that if the separation of mother and infant is going to
be more than a day or so, an electric pump can be a very beneficial tool,
however mother could certainly continue to hand express for the duration of
the separation, for as long as needed.
