Magda,

I am wondering if part of the reason is not the increasing medicalization of
birth. With an epidural rate at around 80% for most term births in the U.S
it isn't surprising that breastpumps are considered a standard part of
breastfeeding. As birth intervention increases and increases, I think we
will also see breastfeeding needing many tools to get it off to the right
start. I think that the acceptance of breastpumps as part of breastfeeding
goes right along with the concept that birth is a disease that needs to be
cured. Just my .02

Subject: Re: mom's pumping

Magda had a good point.....

"I am still wondering why this whole discussion accepts pumps as an
uncontroversial part of breastfeeding. For some special medical
situations,
sure, but it really is not so in the rest of the universe (though sadly
 spreading)."

I do see more and more that mom's count a breastpump as practically part of
their layette. It is sad to see so many pumps for auction or sale. Working
mom's don't have much of a choice except to hand express, and that seems to
be a lost art. Stay at home mom's seem to be obsessed even prior to
delivery
about the husband being able to feed baby, or that she will be able to "get
away" from the baby! These mom's are also looking for the lowest price, so
they go on the internet. Understandably, but what they don't realize is
that
there is nothing like linking to a consultant, LLL leader, or some other
flesh and blood person to whom you can call and talk to or meet with in
person. Claudia
