canned salmon with bones in (blended very smooth)
This will increase mother's calcium intake. Eating the FAT in the salmon
will increase her Vitamin D.
Herring and (here it comes again) COD LIVER OIL contain Vitamin D...
No cow's milk contains Vitamin D in significant amounts unless it is added.
Cow's milk was chosen as the food to fortify in this way because of its
calcium, which is thought to be best utilized if consumed together with
Vitamin D. Also, at the time this practice was begun, EVERYONE drank more
milk than they do now, so it was a sure thing.
The mineral content of milk is in the nonfat portion, so reduced-fat milks
have slightly more minerals per volume. This difference is not of
significance in normal people.
Water-soluble Vitamin D supplements can enter breast milk in potentially
harmful amounts. The naturally occurring forms are more difficult to get
poisoned by.
Bon appetit!
