Rachel,
The Mother's Milk Bank of San Jose, CA provides pooled milk from no more than
4 donors (expressing at 34 weeks gestation or less) to premies. Donors are
screened and the milk is pasteurized. When we receive the milk in the NICU we
have no idea who the donors are. I don't know if the milk bank keeps track of
which particular donors are contributing to which baby--somehow I doubt it,
but I can find out on Monday. I imagine that Barbara Wilson-Clay has info
about this. Does the milk in your hospital come from a milk bank? And is it
pasteurized? The director of the San Jose milk bank explained to me that the
milk is pooled so that it can be processed in larger quantities. I would
guess that pre-term milk is not as available as term milk.
