If the baby died of SIDS despite sleeping with the mother, he also would
have died of SIDS if sleeping somewhere else. SIDS isn't about who the baby
sleeps with, and SIDS isn't smothering. A SIDS cause of death means they
don't know why the baby died, but the death wasn't caused by smothering.

Formula-fed babies are twice as likely to die of SIDS as breastfed babies.

Breastfeeding mothers are acutely aware of their babies, especially if they
bedshare on a safe surface. Research conducted with infrared cameras in
sleep labs is very clear on that. You might suggest the mother contact
either Dr. McKenna http://www.nd.edu/~jmckenn1/lab/ or Dr. Helen Ball
http://www.dur.ac.uk/sleep.lab/ and ask for their suggestions.
