I am so sorry that I forgot to include my name and address for those of you
who would like either of the handouts entitled Ridding Your Institution of
Infant Formula or Infant Feeding Product Recalls. One other thing I learned
about recalls is that there is a difference between a product recall and a
market withdrawal of a product. Recalls are recorded and tracked by the FDA.
Market withdrawals are when a company removes products from the shelves and no
one is the wiser. We have no idea how many times infant formula products have
been pulled by the manufacturer as these events are not reported to the FDA.

This reminds me of the stories of two nurses who told me about incidents in
their hospitals. One nurse was emptying the rest of the formula that a baby
did not consume and out poured a black bug. I asked if she had told the
mother. "Of course not--we would not want to make her feel guilty!!!!!!" She
did call the formula rep who drove over, removed all the formula cases and
replaced them with new ones.

Second nurse is getting ready to bottle-feed a baby and notices that the
product has separated. The oil is on the top and the rest is on the bottom.
She checked the bottles in the discharge packs and some of them had also
separated. Some of these discharge packs had already been given to mothers to
take home. Over comes the rep, takes away all the cases, and replaces them
with new ones. I would be happy to track these events too if people would
inform me when these things happen. Even though infant formula is highly
regulated in the USA it is still a manufactured product and subject to
problems just as any other manufactured product is.
