Do Policy statements count? How about the AAFP and the ABM? How about Marsha Walker's "Selling Out Mothers and Babies" with it's myraid of published resources?
How about the laboratory data at LaTrobe Univ?
www.latrobe.edu.au/microbiology/milk.html
where you can find lists of living components that can never be added to formula - at least not in their original form or source. (Who knows what will happen in the Brave New World of BioEngineering?)
Search out "101 Reasons to Breastfeed". All statements have one or more citation.

You might suggest that the burden of proof is on him to produce documentation from peer-reviewed medical journals, that has NOT been financed in any way by any formula company, that formula is better than breast milk for the normal, healthy, full term baby and for the great majority of preemies? Isn't it his job to prove that the substitute is better than the Original / Normal? The very fact that ABM companies regularly add new components to their products, is actual defacto proof that they are running hard just to keep up.

If you can, give him the entire article, not just the citations. We have won many an argument at my hospital just because our stack of paper was bigger than theirs - by a LONG shot! They usually have 2-3 articles. Ours is 1" to 2" thick when we're on short notice.

Subject: Need supporting documentation for bfg-public health issue, hazards of formula: Urgent

I am in a bind and don't have enough time to put this together on my
own. Our local Public Health dept wants to eliminate the WIC "enhanced"
breastfeeding program-- the LCs who give the real hands-on help when
moms are having problems (not to mention who are bilingual). Our local
Bfg Coalition has already appealed to our Board of Supervisors, but I
learned for the first time yesterday that our biggest obstacle is that
the PHD director simply doesn't believe that breastfeeding makes a
difference in public health. I've tried to explain that overall health
care expenditures will decrease for the investment into the LCs, but
this has been patently denied. They don't believe the research, not to
mention haven't read it. We have already submitted a document that was
well researched and prepared by someone with a MPH and LL background,
but I'd like to submit more documentation. The decision is finalized
tomorrow so I need to gather the best of the best today. I'm already
citing the AAP and DHHS. I'm having trouble in narrowing down my medline
search-- would like to be specific to public health journals and
commentaries. If you know of an excellent resource that I can get my
hands on today, please email or call me asap.

Thank you,
Lisa Marasco
